Step 3: Publish your data
Licenses
Creative Commons Licenses and Open Data Commons Licenses
heiDATA allows a variety of different licensing models for publishing research data. We recommend the choice of Creative Commons licenses. In our view, the license variant CC-BY or even CC0 currently guarantees the free usability of the published research data in accordance with the Open Access and Open Science requirements. Restrictions by means of a "share-alike component", on the other hand, can lead to incompatibilities with other licenses and possibly hinder collaborative work. CC BY-ND or CC BY-NC also restrict the possibilities of use - especially in a scientific context - too much. You can also find more information about the recommended licenses in our archiving and authoring agreement for heiDATA. As a rule, we recommend the license CC-BY-4.0. If you have chosen a license, please select it under “Terms” or let us know and we will enter it for you.
The selected license will be noted in the datasets before publication under “Terms” and documented in the author agreement. If you have any questions, please contact the support team.
Software licenses
For the publication of software or source code, which is also possible via heiDATA, we recommend the use of specific software licenses. On the website Choosealicense as well as in the license documentation of the Free Software Foundation you can get an overview.
Please note: According to the guidelines of Heidelberg University, the economic potential of the developed software in particular must also be considered when choosing a suitable license. In joint consultation with the Research Division 6.1: Legal and Structural Issues of Research Funding, an agreement for a suitable license model can be reached here. Please contact the department “Patent Management” for this purpose.

Review of the dataset
Once you have selected the license and entered the metadata as described in 2.2, please click on the “Submit for Review” button.
An admin will review your record and notify you of any required changes. Once the admin has approved your submission, you will be notified. You can decide whether the data should be published immediately or whether this should be done at a later date, e.g. when the associated publication is accepted. Once you have given the approval, the data will be published, the DOI will be unlocked and the data will be searchable and accessible.
